How We Use BOTOX® to Treat TMD

We are so excited to be able to use BOTOX®/Xeomin in our Virginia Beach dental office for cosmetic procedures, which just got signed into law in Virginia this year!

However, today we want to discuss how BOTOX can help patients suffering from the debilitating symptoms often accompanying temporomandibular disorder or TMD. Dr. Dag Zapatero has been pioneering this type of BOTOX treatment for years, and here's what you should know.

What Is TMD?

TMD occurs when your jaw joint is not functioning properly, which can happen for several reasons, including bite misalignment, tooth clenching and grinding, and stress and anxiety. Some of the symptoms associated with TMD are:

  • Pain or tenderness when chewing
  • Jaw locking open or closed
  • Popping or clicking in the jaw joint
  • Frequent headaches or migraines
  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Ringing in your ears

For some patients, the symptoms of TMD can be very debilitating and greatly impact the quality of their lives.

How Does BOTOX Help TMD?

Injecting BOTOX into the muscles associated with the jaw joint temporarily relaxes them, which can result in alleviating some of the symptoms related to TMD and provide relief. For many patients, this is enough to eliminate their TMD so they can comfortably enjoy daily life.

The effects of BOTOX tend to last for three to four months before patients will need additional injections.

How Can Dr. Zapatero Help with TMD?

Dr. Zapatero has completed additional training in delivering safe and effective BOTOX injections beyond his initial dental training in facial structure, anatomy, and musculature. He is an excellent candidate to provide your BOTOX injections, whether you want to treat TMD or enhance your facial appearance.
